Trozena Trail and the hidden Paradision Waterfalls

The Trozena hiking trail is a circular route set in the beautiful Diarizos Valley, passing through the abandoned village of Trozena, a small forest, a river gorge, and some truly spectacular viewpoints over the valley below. Without a doubt, this was one of the most beautiful hikes I have done in Cyprus.
Practical information
Length: Circular route (approx. 3 km)
Estimated duration: 1–1.5 hours
Difficulty: 1–2
Starting point: Park near the Church of Agios Georgios
Best time to visit: November to April, especially after rainfall
Note: It is best to follow the trail clockwise, as there is a steep wooden ladder near the end of the route
What makes this hike even more special is the history behind it. Trozena and nearby Gerovasa once formed a shared community where Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots lived peacefully side by side. Over the years, both villages were gradually abandoned, and today the remaining houses, many partially ruined, still hold traces of the lives once lived there.
I happened to hike this trail after heavy rain, which made the experience even more memorable. At several points, the river had overflowed and covered large parts of the trail, so instead of simply following the path, we often found ourselves walking through the water itself. It was definitely wet, and in some places unavoidable, but it added something so unique to the hike. Rather than taking away from the experience, it made it even more special.
The sound of the flowing water echoed through the valley, the entire landscape was incredibly green, and everything felt so alive. It was one of those hikes where the weather completely transformed the scenery.
What made it even more special was discovering these smaller waterfalls throughout the route. Around almost every corner there was another little cascade, with water rushing over rocks and through the greenery, making the whole trail feel magical.
One of the highlights along the trail is Paradision waterfalls, also known as the Trozena waterfall. After heavy rain, the area comes alive with not just one waterfall, but several smaller cascades and streams flowing down the rocks and through the gorge, creating the beautiful little waterfalls along the way before reaching the main fall. The main waterfall itself is seasonal and can become very impressive in winter and spring, cascading down from a high rocky cliff into the valley below.
Just next to the main waterfall, there is a steep wooden ladder, which adds a small adventurous element to the route. From there, the trail continues uphill until it loops back to the Church of Agios Georgios, where the hike had begun. The church is actually the only fully preserved building in the abandoned village, which makes returning there feel like a fitting end to the walk.
This is definitely a trail I would recommend during the rainy season, when the river is flowing and the waterfalls are at their best.
