Exploring Kathikas Village

Nestled on the Laona plateau at around 700 metres above sea level, Kathikas feels like a peaceful pause between the mountains, the coastline and the wild landscapes of Akamas. Surrounded by vineyards, traditional stone houses and open countryside, it is one of those places where time seems to slow down and you naturally find yourself wandering without a plan.

Often described as a gateway to Akamas, Kathikas is much more than a stop on the way to somewhere else. It is a living village filled with history, character and a surprisingly vibrant local atmosphere.

Kathikas has preserved much of its traditional Cypriot charm. As you walk through the village, you will discover stone-built houses, narrow streets and restored courtyards that reflect its long agricultural and winemaking traditions.

The village lies within one of Cyprus’s most important wine-producing regions, with vineyards stretching across the surrounding hills. Here, wine is not simply part of the local economy; it is part of the identity and everyday life of the community.

Churches and religious heritage

Like many Cypriot villages, Kathikas has a strong connection with its religious heritage.

At the heart of the village stands the main church, Panagia Evangelistria, which was built in 1870 on the remains of an older church dedicated to Agios Hypatios, the village’s patron saint. Today, it remains the central place of worship and an important part of village celebrations and traditions.

Around Kathikas, you will also find several smaller chapels, including Agios Onoufrios. Every year on Good Friday, the village hosts a traditional procession connected with the Passion of Christ, with the route beginning from the chapel of Agios Onoufrios and continuing towards Panagia Evangelistria. This meaningful cultural tradition attracts both locals and visitors from across Cyprus.

The modern village life

What makes Kathikas especially interesting is the beautiful contrast between its traditional character and its modern, relaxed social scene.

Kathikas Gin Bar

In recent years, the village has gained attention for its Gin Bar, a stylish and unexpected addition to this traditional setting. Especially in the evenings, the village takes on a different atmosphere, with people gathering for drinks beneath the warm village lights.

Alongside this, you will find a lovely mix of tavernas, wine bars and cafés, creating a lively yet laid-back atmosphere. Kathikas manages to feel both authentic and contemporary at the same time.

Wineries and wine culture

Kathikas is one of Cyprus’s most important wine villages, and the surrounding area is home to well-known wineries such as Sterna Winery and Vasilikon Winery. Both offer visitors the opportunity to discover local grape varieties, enjoy wine tastings and learn more about traditional Cypriot winemaking.

Visiting a winery here is not only about tasting wine. It is about experiencing the landscape, admiring the views across the vineyards and connecting with a tradition that has been part of this region for generations.

Museums and local character

Kathikas also has a small but fascinating folklore and local heritage museum, offering visitors a glimpse into traditional village life. Inside, you can discover old tools, household objects and agricultural equipment that tell the story of how people lived and worked in the area.

The village itself often feels like an open-air museum, especially in the older parts where stone houses, courtyards and traditional architecture have been carefully preserved.

You can come for a walk, stay for a glass of wine, and often end up spending much more time than planned simply wandering through its streets. Its location also makes it an ideal base for exploring nearby attractions such as Akamas, Smigies, the Baths of Aphrodite, Polis and Latchi.

Kathikas offers atmosphere, authenticity and a strong sense of place. Between its churches, vineyards, museums and modern touches, such as its tavernas, wineries and cafés, Kathikas beautifully brings together old and new Cyprus in a way that feels completely natural.
