Set in the heart of the Kathikas vineyards, Sterna Winery welcomes you with a quietly authentic atmosphere from the moment you arrive. Surrounded by vineyards, it offers a relaxed and personal wine tasting experience that reflects the character of rural Cyprus.
It is a family owned boutique winery, established in the mid-1990s, and has become one of the most well-known wine stops in the Laona Akamas region. What makes it special is not only the wine, but the feeling that everything here is closely connected to the land.
This is one of Cyprus’s key wine regions, known as the Laona Akamas wine route, where altitude, limestone soils and Mediterranean climate create ideal conditions for grape growing.
About Sterna Winery
Sterna Winery is a small, family run boutique winery operating since around 1995 in Kathikas village.
It cultivates vineyards in the surrounding area, growing a mix of indigenous Cypriot grapes such as Xynisteri, Maratheftiko and Spourtiko, along with international varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Merlot.
The winery focuses on expressing the character of the region rather than mass production. Everything feels personal, from the welcome to the tasting experience.
The Wine Tasting Experience
What stands out most is the simplicity of the experience. There is no rush, no pressure, just time to taste, ask questions, and enjoy the surroundings. It feels more like being welcomed into someone’s home than visiting a commercial winery.
You are guided through several labels, typically including fresh whites, aromatic rosés, and richer reds. Each wine reflects the local terroir, shaped by the altitude and limestone soils of the Kathikas region.
The Natural Cave Cellar
One of the most unique features of Sterna Winery is its natural cave cellar system.
The winery is built above a network of natural limestone caves, one of which has been adapted into a traditional wine cellar where bottles are stored and aged.
The cave environment remains naturally cool, dark and stable throughout the year, creating ideal conditions for wine maturation. This helps the wines develop depth, balance and character over time.
Caves in the Kathikas region have long been part of the rural landscape and were traditionally used for storage in earlier times. Sterna Winery continues this connection to the land in a natural and understated way, linking modern winemaking with traditional spaces.
Vineyards and Winemaking Philosophy
Sterna Winery cultivates vineyards in the Kathikas area, benefiting from the region’s elevation of around 650 to 700 metres.
The Laona–Akamas region is known for its long sunshine hours, cooling sea breezes, limestone rich soils and slow ripening grapes. This combination produces wines with strong aroma, balanced acidity and distinct character.
The winery produces a range of white, rosé and red wines, with labels that highlight both local Cypriot varieties and international blends.

Visiting Sterna Winery felt like a natural continuation of exploring the Kathikas and Akamas region. What makes Sterna Winery memorable is how naturally it fits into its surroundings. Set among the vineyards, the winery feels closely connected to the landscape rather than separated from it. The cave cellar adds another layer to the experience, offering a glimpse into the traditional way wine was stored and matured.
The combination of the underground cellar, the tasting area and the views across the surrounding vineyards makes the visit feel distinctly connected to the history and character of the Kathikas wine region.
It brought together many of the things that make this part of Cyprus special, from its landscapes and traditions to its villages and deep connection to the land, all in one experience.
