The Baths of Rigena and Chlio Nature Trail

Located at an altitude of 840 meters in North Marathasa, near Moutoullas, the Baths of Rigena and Chlio Nature Trail is a 1.5 km circular route. This easy hike is suitable for all fitness levels, with a slight uphill section on the return leg. The trail is well-maintained and offers informative signs about the area’s history, flora, and fauna. The peaceful walk takes you along the Setrachos River, with lush vegetation and rocky formations. Visiting this trail in March was ideal because everything was in full bloom, adding to the experience.

As you walk, you’ll come across the Baths of Rigena, a site of historical and mythical importance. According to local legend, the Frankish noblewoman Rigena used to bathe here in the sulfuric waters, believed to have healing properties. These waters were a popular destination for the nobility during the Medieval period, who sought their therapeutic effects. Rigena and her husband, Rigas, were said to have spent their holidays here, hunting and enjoying the natural thermal baths. The association of Rigena with the baths makes this location an important part of Cyprus' rich folklore and medieval history.

One of the trail’s highlights is the Lovers Bridge, a wooden bridge crossing the river. Couples use locks to secure their love on the bridge and toss the key into the river, surrounded by dense vegetation and flowing water. This romantic tradition makes the bridge a popular stop along the trail.

Continuing along the path, you’ll find additional viewpoints offering scenic views of the river and surrounding greenery, perfect for short breaks. Another wooden bridge leads to two historic stone fountains with sulfuric water. These springs are linked to Chlio, a site where women from Moutoullas used to wash their clothes. The name Chlio comes from the Greek word “chliaro,” meaning "tepid," which refers to the warm sulfuric waters flowing from the springs. Historically, this spot was a gathering place for the women of Moutoullas, who would wash their clothes in the spring water, using a traditional tool called a "fauta" in Greek, to beat the garments clean.

Chlio in 1940s

In the 1940s, Chlio was moved 150–200 meters downhill to a location with better access. A concrete washing area was constructed, and up until the 1960s, the women of Moutoullas continued to wash their clothes there, using the sulfuric waters. The traditional method involved the women standing in the water and beating the clothes with the fauta.

The trail is abundant with diverse plant life, including oak trees, pines, pear, and other fruit trees, making it a nature lover’s paradise. In March, most of these plants are in full bloom, adding a burst of colour to the landscape.

The Baths of Rigena and Chlio Nature Trail is a rewarding blend of history and natural beauty, making it the perfect destination for a day trip. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, nature lover, or just looking for a peaceful hike, this trail offers something for everyone.
