Rediscovering the magic of Kremmiotis Waterfalls at Kritou Terra

Some corners of Cyprus hold on to their magic, and Kremmiotis Waterfalls is one of them. I was delighted to revisit it this summer, having last been there in 2017. Returning felt like rediscovering this hidden gem nestled in the Paphos countryside.

Kremmiotis is tucked away on the north-eastern edge of Kritou Terra and is one of Paphos' little treasures. Its unique landscape, peaceful scenery, and variety of plants and wildlife make it a special spot to explore. At the picnic area, you’ll see the first small waterfall, giving a refreshing glimpse of what’s ahead. In the warmer months, many visitors enjoy a swim in the pool at its base, a perfect way to cool off from the Mediterranean heat.

From the picnic area, a short trail of about 1-1.5km leads into a beautiful valley. The path is easy to follow, winding gently through the valley. Along the way, you might spot different birds and local plants, adding small surprises to the walk. It usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, and while some sections of the path are uneven, most visitors can enjoy it without any trouble. Good shoes are a must! As you get closer to the main waterfall, the sound of rushing water grows louder, making the anticipation even more exciting.

What makes Kremmiotis really special is its unique formation. The waterfall has two main sections. The first is the cave, where the water drops onto a rock, creating a striking natural scene that has become a favourite spot for visitors. The cave also has a fascinating story behind it. In 1930, a local villager carved a passage through the rock to channel water for irrigation. Over the years, stalactites and stalagmites formed inside, making it a place worth pausing to explore.

The second part is the main waterfall, which you can reach either by passing through the narrow tunnel or by staying on the trail. Hidden among thick greenery, it’s a truly captivating sight. Water flows gently over moss-covered rocks, forming a lush green carpet and a refreshing mist that fills the air. The waterfall drops about seven to eight metres, and while it’s not the tallest in Cyprus, its charm comes from the peaceful setting and untouched beauty. Surrounded by dense vegetation and tall trees, it feels like a hidden oasis.

What I love most about Kremmiotis is the balance between accessibility and seclusion. The path is gentle enough that you do not need to be an experienced hiker to reach it, yet it is quiet enough that you may find yourself there with only a few others or, if you’re lucky, completely alone.

The best time to visit is during spring, when the water flow is at its strongest and the surrounding vegetation is at its most vibrant.

Kremmiotis is more than just a scenic stop. It’s a place where nature, history, and stories come together, offering both calm and inspiration. It’s one of those spots that makes you slow down, listen to the water, and take in the peaceful surroundings. Returning after so many years was a reminder of how many simple, beautiful corners Cyprus still holds.
