Kakarmata Waterfalls in Machairas forest

Deep inside the pine-covered slopes of Machairas Forest lies a series of hidden waterfalls that many people still do not know exist. The Kakarmata Waterfalls are one of those places that feel untouched, quiet and slightly wild, especially compared to the more popular trails of the area.

Machairas Forest itself is a vast and diverse mountain landscape, filled with nature trails, picnic sites and dense pine forests that stretch across the hills of central Cyprus.

The Kakarmata Waterfalls are believed to be a series of cascades, with at least three distinct falls along the riverbed. However, most visitors only reach the first waterfall, as the path becomes more challenging and less defined further upstream. The area is not officially developed as a main hiking route, which makes it feel even more natural and untouched.

I only visited the first waterfall during my hike. With the weather already warming up and the terrain becoming drier, I decided not to continue further. One of the things to always keep in mind in these areas is that during the warmer months there is an increased presence of snakes, so caution is always needed when walking through less maintained trails.

The first waterfall itself is simply beautiful. I was lucky enough to see it after a heavy rainy winter season. Water flows between the rocks, surrounded by pine trees and wild vegetation. It is not one of the highest waterfalls in Cyprus, but the scenery is truly magical. Its charm lies in its isolation and the peacefulness of the surrounding forest.

What makes this area special is not just the waterfalls themselves, but the feeling of being completely away from everything. No crowds, no noise, just the sound of water and nature.

The access is not clearly marked and changes depending on the season and water levels, so it is best suited for experienced hikers or those familiar with the area. Good shoes and awareness of the surroundings are essential.

Like many hidden spots in Machairas, Kakarmata remains relatively unknown, which is probably what keeps it so special. It is one of those places you do not plan too much for, but simply discover while exploring the forest.

Sometimes it is the quietest places in nature that stay with you the longest.
