Hiking the Doxa soi o Theos Trail

The Doxa soi o Theos – Madari Trail is one of those mountain trails where the views keep getting better as you climb. Located along the Madari ridge in the Troodos Mountains, the trail takes you through the forest before opening up to beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and villages.

The trail is officially rated as difficulty level 3, but I personally found it moderately challenging. There are uphill sections and parts of the path are rocky and uneven, so it is worth keeping this in mind if you are planning to hike it.

Practical information:

  • Length: 3.8 km – Linear

  • Estimated duration: 2 hours

  • Difficulty rate: 3

  • Starting point: Doxa soi o Theos, around 2 km from Kyperounta and 5 km from Spilia

The trail starts at Doxa soi o Theos, on the road between Kyperounta and Spilia, and follows the Madari ridge towards the Madari fire lookout station and Adelfoi peak.

At the beginning, the trail passes through the forest, but as you gradually gain altitude, the trees become less dense and the views begin to open up. This is probably my favourite part of the hike. The full panorama doesn't reveal itself straight away, making the walk feel like a gradual discovery of the surrounding landscape.

As you continue along the ridge, the views become increasingly impressive. On a clear day, you can see across the surrounding mountains and valleys, and there are plenty of spots where you'll want to stop for a few minutes just to take it all in.

The trail follows the Madari ridge and ends close to Adelfoi peak, which stands at 1,613 metres. Nearby, you can also climb the Madari fire lookout tower for even wider views across the surrounding mountains and valleys.

If you have already explored the Madari area, you may recognise some of the landscape from the Teisia tis Madaris Trail, which is another hike I really enjoyed. The Selladi tou Karamanli – Madari Trail is another option in the same area and connects with the Doxa soi o Theos – Madari route. This makes the Madari area a great place to explore if you enjoy mountain hiking.

There is a drinking water fountain at the starting point, but I would still recommend taking enough water with you, especially during the warmer months. The weather along the ridge can also be quite different from conditions at lower elevations, so it is worth checking the forecast before setting off.

For me, the Doxa soi o Theos – Madari Trail was a really enjoyable moderate hike. The uphill sections provide a good workout without making the walk too demanding, and the views make the effort worthwhile. Once you reach the higher parts of the Madari ridge, it is easy to forget about the climb and simply enjoy being there.
