A Visit to Marathasa Wines in Oikos

Located high in the Marathasa Valley, Marathasa Wines in the village of Oikos was a place I had been meaning to visit for some time. Set at an altitude of around 1125 meters in the Troodos Mountains, the winery stands out immediately, not only for its location but also for the way it blends into the surrounding landscape. It is a place that invites you to slow down, take in the views, and simply enjoy the moment.

The building itself is striking. Modern yet deeply rooted in local tradition, its architecture draws inspiration from the area’s heritage, including nearby monasteries and traditional mountain structures. High ceilings, warm wooden elements, and carefully considered lines give the space an open and welcoming feel, while still respecting the character of the valley.

Behind Marathasa Wines is a family story closely tied to the region. With roots in the nearby village of Kalopanagiotis, the vision was to revive the Marathasa Valley’s long history of vine growing. Old, abandoned vineyards were brought back to life, and a contemporary winery was created to support small scale, quality driven production that reflects the land it comes from.

Wine Tasting With a View

While I did not book a guided tour, I did enjoy a wine tasting, which is also offered with thoughtfully selected food pairings. This made the experience feel relaxed and complete, allowing the wines to really shine alongside complementary flavours.

The tasting area offers beautiful, uninterrupted views across the valley. Mountain views, terraced vineyards, and the calm of the surrounding nature create a memorable setting. Sitting there with a glass in hand, it is easy to understand how much the landscape influences what ends up in the bottle.

All the wines are produced from the winery’s own vineyards, grown at high altitude where cooler temperatures help preserve freshness and character. From crisp, aromatic whites to more structured reds, each wine feels expressive and closely connected to its environment.

Winery Tours

For those who want a deeper insight into the winery and its philosophy, Marathasa Wines also offers guided tours that need to be prebooked. These tours provide a closer look at the vineyards, the winemaking process, and the story behind each label, adding valuable context to the tasting experience. Prebooking is essential, especially during weekends or busier seasons, to ensure availability and a more personal experience.

Marathasa Wines is more than just a stop for wine lovers. It is a place where architecture, history, and nature come together. Even without a tour, the experience of tasting the wines, enjoying the pairings, and taking in the views makes it well worth the visit.
