Cyprus is full of hidden places waiting to be explored and deep within the forests of Machairas lies one of its most forgotten gems, the abandoned Prophet Elias Monastery.
Although the site is relatively well known among hikers, cyclists and campers, many people in Cyprus still have no idea it exists. Hidden within the pine-covered mountains of Machairas Forest, around 6–7km southwest of the village of Lythrodontas, this abandoned monastery feels like a place frozen in time.
Hidden deep within the forest, the monastery is surrounded by absolute silence. The abandoned buildings and quiet surroundings create a unique atmosphere that feels both peaceful and mysterious at the same time.
The monastery once belonged to Machairas Monastery and functioned as one of its dependencies (metochi), while the monastery owned large forest areas in the region. In 1926, the Department of Forests expropriated both the surrounding forest land and the monastery buildings in an effort to protect the forest from goat grazing. Only the church remained under the ownership of Machairas Monastery. Today, the church still belongs to the monastery, while the surrounding buildings are managed by the Department of Forests.
Interestingly, the monastery was later used as a children’s summer camp, something many older locals still remember today.
Despite the abandonment, the church itself remains in very good condition and stands proudly overlooking the forested mountains. The original church is believed to date back possibly to the 12th century. Remains of old wall paintings can still be seen beneath newer plaster on the northern wall, while architectural details, such as the damaged semi-circular brick arch on the southern wall, hint at its long history.
Behind the monastery rises a mountain peak that locals often refer to as the “Throne of Prophet Elias.” The views from the area are beautiful, especially early in the morning when the first sunlight slowly reaches the mountain peaks. Locals even say that on very clear days, you may be able to spot the sea of Limassol in the distance.
Right next to the monastery, visitors will also find a peaceful picnic site surrounded by pine trees, making it a perfect spot to relax after exploring the area. The picnic area includes tables, barbecues and basic facilities, while the quiet atmosphere of the forest makes it ideal for a slow morning or afternoon in nature.
Behind the church, there is also a natural spring. Locals say the water here is among the best drinking water in Cyprus, and many visitors still stop to fill their bottles before leaving.
Whether you visit for photography, hiking, cycling or simple curiosity, the abandoned Prophet Elias Monastery is one of those places that leaves an impression on you. Quiet, mysterious and surrounded by nature, it is a hidden corner of Cyprus that feels untouched by time.
