Leave No Trace principles: 7 simple rules for responsible hiking

Whether you’re hiking in the mountains, walking through forests, or exploring coastal paths, the way we behave outdoors matters. The Leave No Trace principles are a set of simple guidelines designed to protect nature and keep it as untouched as possible. These principles apply everywhere in the world, and they are just as important when hiking in Cyprus.

  1. Plan Ahead and Prepare

Before heading out, take time to plan your route, check the weather, and understand the terrain. Being prepared helps you avoid unnecessary risks and reduces the chances of impacting the environment. In Cyprus, this is especially important during the summer months, when high temperatures and dry conditions can make hiking more demanding.

  1. Travel on Durable Surfaces

Stick to marked trails and established paths. Walking off trail may seem harmless, but it can damage vegetation and lead to soil erosion. Many trails in Cyprus pass through protected natural areas, so staying on the path helps preserve the landscape.

  1. Dispose of Waste Properly

Everything you bring with you should leave with you. This includes food wrappers, bottles, and even biodegradable waste like fruit peels. Leaving anything behind, no matter how small, affects the environment and takes away from the experience for others.

  1. Leave What You Find

Avoid picking plants, moving rocks, or taking anything as a souvenir. Nature is best enjoyed as it is. In Cyprus, some plants and flowers are endemic, meaning they only grow here, so it’s important to leave them untouched.

  1. Minimise Campfire Impact

Campfires can cause serious damage if not handled properly. In many places, they are restricted or not allowed at all. This is especially important in Cyprus, where the risk of wildfires is very high, particularly during the summer. Even something small can have serious consequences.

  1. Respect Wildlife

Observe animals from a distance and avoid feeding them. Interfering with wildlife can disrupt their natural behaviour and harm their survival. Even smaller animals and birds play an important role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.

  1. Be Considerate of Others

Keep noise levels low and respect other hikers. Everyone is there to enjoy nature, and small actions can make a big difference to someone else’s experience.

The idea behind Leave No Trace is simple. Leave nature exactly as you found it so others can enjoy it the same way. These principles apply everywhere, and by following them, we help protect places in Cyprus and beyond for the future.
